52 Library Card Uses
Decide which computer to buy using a consumer guide. Number 26 in a series of uses for your library card.
To spend your money wisely you'd do well to become an informed consumer, and the place to become informed is at your library.
Technology changes so rapidly it's difficult to keep on top of things. If you're considering a purchase, the most current information won't be in books, it will be online and in magazines. You can find computer information in a publication such as Consumer Reports on the shelf. You can also find it through the library's databases, available through the Databases link on the home page. Databases contain a tremendous amount of information, much of it in the form of downloadable full-text magazine articles. This information is available to you from home through your computer and library card, or through the computers at your Great River Regional Library location.
One of the databases is called MegaFILE. It includes full text of articles from hundreds of periodicals including PC Business Products, PC Magazine, PC Week, PC World and MacWorld. A simple search using the phrase "Buying a Computer" with publication limited to 2008 to 2011 provided more than 90 hits, including articles such as "The New Rules for Buying a Mac," and "Cutting Technology Costs with Refurbished Computers," and "Picking Out a Laptop In the Brave, New World of Tablets."
