Jack and the Beanstalk?
The Lunch with the Master Gardeners program ended Tuesday, Aug. 18 at the Buffalo Library.
At the last session, a patron brought in a plant taller than he was to be identified. It didn't smell very good, had pink buds and furry, heart-shaped leaves. The stalk was thick and tough. Master Gardeners Jim and Sue Johnson knew what the plant was right away: "Velvetleaf." It is an annual which should be pulled from the yard or garden and seeds should not be allowed to form. Seeds can germinate 50 years after being buried in the soil! The patron was happy to have his answer and the staff was happy to see the plant leave the building.
