Get Ready for School

The transition from summer to school can create anxiety for kids, but your library can help. Ensure your child has the smartest card of all, a library card. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library do better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.
School Beginners
If your young child is getting ready for his or her very first day of school, visit the library catalog to find a picture book about kindergarten, separation anxiety, meeting new people or trying new activities.
Fitting In
If your older child has had trouble making friends, being bullied or worrying about the "in-crowd," come find non-fiction books dealing with these issues.
Academic Preparedness
Most libraries have Accelerated Reader lists from their local schools if children want to get a jump start on their reading for the school year. If the library has not received an accelerated reading list from your child's school, your librarian can look up books that are the correct reading level on the AR Bookfinder website.
Learning Express Library
From fourth-grade reading diagnostic tests to the GED and graduate school entrance exam preparation, the LearningExpressLibrary database provides all kinds of worksheets for writing, math, grammar and vocabulary skills improvement.
Online Resources
Use the library's computers to find online resources to help your children get off to a running start in the new school year. For example, more than 6,000 free math worksheets with answer keys are available at www.math-drills.com.
