Howard Lake Author Talk Impresses Audience
Author Barbara Sommer gave an author talk at the Howard Lake Public Library on July 15. Sommer spoke about her Minnesota Book Award-winning “Hard Work And A Good Deal: The Civilian Conservation Corps in Minnesota.” The Civilian Conservation Corps supplied jobs to more than 77,000 Minnesotans during the Great Depression. Howard Lake branch manager Deb Cox-Johnson said it was an excellent presentation. “Patrons commented on how deeply informed Sommer was and how interesting to listen to. The slides of photos from her book were a highlight of the presentation,” she said. The presentation made the front page of the Herald Journal.
Cox Johnson also told this little story. “Gavin, a ten-year-old patron attended, saying he had always wanted to meet an author, and ended up manning the power point presentation. Later the Herald Journal reporter (Jennifer Gallus) had the idea to give him a gift of the book, and Barbara Sommer and I also contributed to its purchase. Barbara Sommer inscribed it to him. He was awestruck upon receiving it the next day.”
