Overdue Charges Changing in 2010

Minor changes have been made to overdue charges, effective on all items returned to the library in the new year. These charges help ensure library materials are returned promptly and remain available to patrons. Overdue charges for children’s video materials are decreasing. In most other cases the overdue charge is changing from 20 cents/day to 25 cents/day.

Changes to charges on children’s video bring them into line with other children’s materials. Children visit the library and check out materials but often don’t have the same ability as adults to decide when they’ll return. The change limits the likelihood of children unwittingly accumulating substantial charges.

The library assesses overdue charges based on the intended audience for the material rather than the age of the borrower since many borrowers use cards interchangeably within a family.
