Overdue Charges Changing In New Year

At its meeting on Nov. 10, the Great River Regional Library (GRRL) Board of Trustees approved changes to the Circulation and Distribution Policy (item 10.2 on the meeting agenda). Minor changes were made to overdue charges. These charges help ensure library materials are returned promptly and remain available to patrons. Changes will take effect in 2010. Overdue charges for children’s video materials are decreasing. In most other cases the overdue charge is changing from 20 cents/day to 25 cents/day.

“We’ve reduced the charges on children’s video to bring them into line with other children’s materials,” said Mic Golden, GRRL Collection Development Coordinator. “Children visit the library and check out materials but often don’t have the same ability as adults to decide when they’ll return. We wanted to limit the likelihood of children unwittingly accumulating substantial charges.”

GRRL assesses overdue charges based on the intended audience for the material rather than the age of the borrower since many borrowers use cards interchangeably within a family.
