Pierz Library Mural Brightens Main Street
A librarian’s inspiration and community help have brightened the façade of the Pierz Public Library.
When the Pierz library moved from one Main Street location to another in December, 2008, staff were so happy to be inside their new space they weren’t too concerned about the outside. But the weathered stucco exterior and location between two businesses made the library difficult to spot. “People were driving up and down the road and calling the library, saying, ‘Where are you?’” said Branch Manager Bev Gold.
Main Street will be repaved next year, and new sidewalks are planned, so it didn’t make sense to invest money in refinishing the building. Then Gold had an inspiration. She was riding a Chicago ‘L’ train when it went by a building beautifully decorated with painted leaves. “I could do that for the library,” she told her daughter.
Gold drew up a design. The Pierz City Council approved it. Library users donated paint. High school students Jenny Brenny, Sam Herold, Sammi Lucking and Cassie Seppelt got busy. And in the blink of an eye the building was transformed. The mural is temporary, because the building will be refinished after road construction is completed. New signage and an awning are planned for then, Gold said.
