Proposals Requested for Library Donor Recognition Project

When the new St. Cloud Public Library opened in 2008, donors responded to a development campaign so the library could purchase new computers, technology, books and other materials to meet increased demand.

Now, regional artists are invited to submit proposals for a monumental art piece to recognize the contributions of donors to that campaign.

The recognition project will list donor names by their level of contribution in a space 10 ft. wide by 8 ft. high. It must be 36 inches from floor level, and it must be compatible with its physical environment (the library lobby), taking into consideration materials, the color palette of the building and physical interaction with visitors to a public space. A donor list will be available January 15, 2010.

The budget is $20,000, and covers complete cost of construction and installation.

An informational workshop for artists interested in applying is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23, 10 a.m. – 12 noon in the St. Cloud Public Library Bremer Room. The submission deadline is Monday, March 1. Applicants must submit a biographical summary, a letter of interest describing the approach to the project, three references from recently completed projects, and up to ten work samples and descriptions. A group of finalists will be selected to receive a design stipend to prepare design concepts and cost estimates for review by late April. An artist commission recommendation will be forwarded to the St. Cloud Public Library Board and City Council for formal approval.

Eligibility is restricted to visual artists residing in Minnesota. Not eligible are City of St. Cloud employees, City Council members, and members of the boards of the St. Cloud Friends of the Library, the Great River Regional Library, the St. Cloud Public Library, and St. Cloud Arts Commission.
