Management of St. Cloud Library a New Challenge for Regional Supervisor
Since being promoted from Reference Librarian to Regional Supervisor for Central Branches in October, 2009, Michele Monson has also been the building manager for the St. Cloud Public Library.
As Regional Supervisor, she supervises the Branch Managers of Great River Regional Library (GRRL) branches in Foley, Clearwater and Waite Park and ensures they receive the support they need from the GRRL administration based in St. Cloud.
As building manager, she has overall responsibility for the St. Cloud building, a task that can be consuming and challenging. At 118,000 sq. ft., it is more than five times the size of the next largest building in the system. Its lighting and heating and ventilation systems are complex, and meeting rooms have sophisticated audio-visual technology. When everything works well, it's great. When things don't, Monson's name is the one called over the intercom. She's also called for other building emergencies and operational questions.
“The main thing I've learned so far is how complex this building is,” she said. "I am in regular contact with the city and with contractors. As with any large building, some problems aren't immediately obvious or only develop as systems get used. I spend part of my time troubleshooting those issues."
Monson oversees the building's public service departments (adult services, children's services and circulation) as well as supervising the library's custodians. She is the person who coordinates volunteers for the St. Cloud building and is the branch liaison to the St. Cloud Public Library board and to the St. Cloud Friends of the Library.
