St. Michael Summer Library Camp a Huge Success

St. Michael Summer Library Camp a Huge Success

The St. Michael Public Library was host to two sessions of Library Camp held July 22 and 23. Branch Assistants Nancy Bunting and Jill Mertes served as camp counselors and engaged the campers to "Dig Into"  worms, hedgehogs and dirt.

"I thought it'd be great if we could have something that could incorporate the Summer Reading Program theme and then be able to offer crafts and snacks and learning opportunities," said Branch Manager Marla Scherber. "I proposed this to my staff and Nancy and Jill ran with it." With monetary help from the St. Michael-Albertville-Hanover Friends of the Library it became possible.

The first day for the kids ages 5-7 was all about hedgehogs and other underground animals. Children went on a nature walk, used the SRP scavenger hunt forms, and found most of the items on the form right in the fields next to the building. The second session was for kids ages 8-11, and they used what they found on their scavenger hunt to make their own fossils. Jill made salt dough and baked their fossils, and the kids painted them the next day. Nancy researched and found a lot of cute snack ideas (for example a hedgehog made out of a donut hole and chocolate sprinkles) and read hedgehog stories.

The second day was "worm day." Children made dirt cups with worms (chocolate pudding cups, crushed Oreos and gummy worms) and constructed "worm motels" out of empty 2-liter bottles and dirt and worms. They all got information about worms and were able to check out books that related to our "Dig into Reading" theme. They spent many hours planning, ordering and preparing for what was really four programs back-to-back.

When asked to name their favorite part of Library Camp, "The Teachers!" and "I wish it was all summer long," and "The WORMS!!" were some of their answers. We're already planning our camp for next year's Summer Reading Program science theme, and we have lots of great ideas cooking!
