Friends of the Staples Public Library Celebrate Anniversary

The Friends of the Staples Public Library continues to be a vibrant, dedicated group of library supporters making a difference in our community. On Thursday, Feb. 24, the Staples Friends of the Library, City of Staples and library staff led a first anniversary celebration of our Grand Opening. Two Minnesota legacy funded music programs highlighted the celebration with Wiggle Jiggle and Jam for children and Tim and Cindy Roggenkamp, Minnesota Hall of Fame Rock and Country performers for adults.

The Friends received the second place Evy Nordley Best Project by Friends award at the Minnesota Library Association Conference in Rochester this past October for their amazing fundraising project that achieved their goal of raising $30,000!

They have purchased several items for the new library with these funds including:
  ·     Cushioned seating in the children’s Round House reading area
  ·     Outdoor bike rack
  ·     Story kit display racks
  ·     Magazine holders
  ·     Two bean bag chairs
  ·     Wooden newspaper rack with dowels
  ·     Magazine exchange shelving
  ·     Additional computer workstation
  ·     Atrium benches
  ·     Holiday decorations
  ·     Children’s display shelving
  ·     Pull-out drawers for children’s collection, patron-requested DVD’s and circulation desk supplies.

The Friends group will be adding art work to the library walls and other furnishings in 2011/2012. An art committee has been formed to select a mounting system for hanging art work, develop a policy or guidelines for selecting and displaying art work, and partner with the City of Staples to develop wall display options for the atrium area and other shared spaces within the city complex.

Also they wrote a grant and were awarded $2,000 from the 3M Corporation for science/technology programs and resources. With 3M funds they have purchased science & technology books for the library collection and hosted a St. John’s Arboretum program for children. Other library programs are being planned with these funds.

If you haven’t visited the new library, please stop by to see the new furnishings and discover all the resources available including two new Internet stations with a total of eight Internet-accessible computers.

The Friends group welcomes your ideas and encourages individuals to join their organization. Stay tuned for details on their September Annual Meeting and two fundraiser events being held during Railroad Days: the Used Book Sale at the Staples Historic Depot (in partnership with the Staples Historical Society) and the Root Beer Float stand.
