Staples Motley Coalition Launching "1000 Books Before Kindergarten"
The Staples Motley Early Childhood Coalition, Staples Motley ECFE and Great River Regional Library (GRRL) announce the launch of their 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. The Coalition will be joining with the Staples Public Library branch of GRRL in offering this fun and exciting reading program for children ages 0-5 years. This program was developed to increase awareness of the importance of early literacy as well as encouraging parents to embrace their role as their child’s first teacher.
The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a pre-literacy effort aimed at encouraging families to read at least 1000 books to their preschooler, birth to age 5, before they enter school. Families can sign up beginning Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010 at the Staples Public Library Grand Opening celebration at the Staples Motley Early Childhood Coalition table. Each child will receive a book bag and a binder with pages to record the books they read. Each time a goal of recording 20 books is reached, children are encouraged to bring their binder to the library to receive a stamp and a sticker celebrating their accomplishment. Children are not required to read certain books; they can read any book they would like.
The goal of this project is to help kids enter school ready to learn. Reading is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your child’s success when they begin school. It also provides an opportunity to increase their exposure to a wide variety of books, and to promote use of the library – a treasure trove of free material available to our community members.
The Staples Motley Early Childhood Coalition is a diverse group of area community members who meet monthly to develop and strengthen programs within the Staples-Motley School District to ensure children are prepared and ready to start their school journey. Based on feedback received at a community speak-out in February 2009, three target areas have been identified and are currently the focus of the Coalition. New members are welcome to join us at any time. The Coalition is funded by grant money received from the Central Minnesota Initiative Foundation.
