Summer Reading Programs Help Kids Maintain Skills

Summer Reading Programs Help Kids Maintain Skills

As much as you want children to relax and enjoy Minnesota’s beautiful summer, you don’t want them to stop reading.

It’s a fact (studies prove it) that kids who don’t read over the summer are more likely to lose reading skills over the short and long term. It’s also a fact (again, studies prove it) that the best way to ensure kids continue to read through the summer is for them to take part in a library summer reading program.

Great River Regional Library is offering summer reading programs for young children and for teens beginning Monday, June 13 and continuing through Saturday, Aug. 13. They can stop by any of the library’s 32 locations to sign-up for the program, have fun and become eligible for prize drawings.

One World, Many Stories
The children's program, "One World, Many Stories," is for children age 3 to sixth grade. For each five hours of reading completed, a child can return a reading record to the library and be entered in prize drawings. They can complete as many reading records as they like. All reading records returned will be included in a regional grand prize drawing.

Children in sixth grade can choose to be in the Children's Summer Reading Program or the Teen Summer Reading Program.

Children ages 0-3 have a separate program with age appropriate activities for parents to do with their babies and toddlers, with prize drawings for parents who engage their children in early literacy skills.

You Are Here!
For teens in grades 6-12, the 2011 Summer Reading Program "You Are Here" involves tracking reading time for prize drawings. The grand prize drawing for teens who have completed reading slips are gift cards for Target, Barnes and Noble, iTunes, Hot Topic, and Amazon.com.

Support Summer Reading
You can help support summer reading through a donation to the Summer Reading Program. Your library will accept donations by cash, check or credit card. Credit card donations can be made online through our PayPal page.

All regional prizes generously paid for with funds from the St. Cloud Friends of the Library.
