Earth Themed Quilt Show at Waite Park Library
To celebrate Earth Day, seventy-five quilts inspired by photos in the book Earth from Above by Yann Arthus-Bertrand are on display at the Waite Park Public Library. The quilts were created in response to an art quilt challenge and fill the library with a dazzling array of colors and images.
Quilt artist Caron Lage discovered the Earth from Above book on the Friends donation cart at the Waite Park Public Library. Leafing through it, she immediately began to imagine the quilts she could create inspired by the amazing photos in the book. She brought the book with her to Aunt Annie’s quilt shop in Avon, hoping to inspire other quilters. It didn’t take long for the inspiration Caron felt to spread to other quilt artists.
The artists decided to acquire the other two books in the Earth from Above series. Each of the 40 artists, some who had never attempted an art quilt before, chose at least one page from the books as inspiration. The guidelines set by the group for their challenge were simple: make a piece of art inspired by, but not duplicating exactly, the page selected; keep it on the small side, and have it completed by mid-February for its first showing at Aunt Annie’s.
To date, over 77 pieces have been submitted for the challenge. In June, they will be displayed as a special exhibit at the Minnesota Quilt Show in Rochester.
