Children don't leap from picture books to novels. Their comfort with reading complex stories develops over time. The next step from picture books is easy readers, and after easy readers they begin chapter books written specially for children. These combine pictures with text in a longer format. After the nineties came the noughties, a decade in which businesses offering intangible products, such as Facebook and Google, became as valuable as companies making things out of iron and steel. Al Qaeda terrorists brought down the World Trade Center. America entered seemingly unending wars on foreign soil. Industrial and economic development in China and India took jobs away from America. Children enjoy reading fiction just as much as adults do. They enjoy romance, sci-fi and mystery, plus other categories and settings adults have left behind (such as the classroom drama).
